The Byram Hills Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation, founded in 1994, that provides financial support to teachers and school administrators for creative programs and equipment, not normally included in the school's annual operating budget. This funding has encouraged teachers to reach beyond the confines of the school budget to provide enriching, curriculum-based learning programs to our children.
The mission of the Byram Hills Education Foundation is to enhance the educational experience of all children within the Byram Hills Central School District by generating community support to fund innovative grants that encourage learning and personal development.
The BHEF enables our schools to provide Byram Hills students with exceptional programs, projects and equipment that are not covered by the Byram Hills School District Operating Budget.

American Legion State Leadership Program
Selecting Byram Hills juniors, the Boys' and Girls' Leadership Programs have been developed and sponsored by North Castle's American Legion and Ladies Auxiliaries Post 1097. As scholarship program chairman Vincent Greco says, "This program is a growth experience for young men and women. Every year, we select Byram Hills juniors who want to participate. It helps their college admissions because it stands out that they were a part of this leadership exercise."
Greco explains, "We underwrite the cost of the program, which depends upon on our financial position. Every year we select juniors who apply. They have to prove they want to further their studies, particularly in government affairs. We interview them, and a member of the leadership committee reviews students' 250-word essays about their contributions to their school and community. They write about what they hope to do in the program, what major they intend to study in college, and what they hope to do later in life. It is an easy narrative about themselves." Some of applicants are top students in the high school's science research program, and are trying to connect science research with their future career.
"We also receive some input from Byram Hills guidance counselors," Greco says. "A total of 28 boys from Westchester attend an orientation, with two or three from Armonk. Same with the girls. The program is always held during the last week of June and into the first week of July. The students need to be available for seven days during that time period." All 28 students are encouraged to get to know one another on the bus ride to SUNY Brockport (for the girls) and SUNY Morrisville State College (for the boys).
1,200 boys participate in New York. They learn about local, county or state government, giving them a sense of what real democracy is about. They are broken down into municipalities and are assigned political parties. They try to lobby one another. Two of the 1,200 will be elected to nations to participate in Boys' or Girls' Nation, to join chosen representatives from 49 other states. They go to Washington to meet the President at the White House. "Anyone from Byram Hills or any of the other school in Westchester has the same chance to see how eloquent he or she can be, how compelling one can be in order to be elected."
Legislators attend and talk to the boys and girls. It is a very professional week. They all come back with glowing reports of how many friends they have made and how they learned that Byram Hills is not the center of the world.
On June 23, 2010, North Castle's Town Board congratulated the Boys' and Girls' Staters for their participation in the program and for being an asset to Byram Hills.
