Michael Smith Claims Victory in Westchester Board of Legislator Race
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Nov. 22, 2011 -- Republican challenger Michael Smith today claimed victory over incumbent Democrat John Nonna in the Westchester Board of Legislators election to represent District 3. That district comprises of Mount Pleasant, Pleasantville, North Castle, and sections of Greenburgh and Sleepy Hollow.
On Monday November 21st, all absentee ballots were counted at the Board of Election’s offices leaving Smith with a 129-vote margin with over 10,000 votes cast in the November 8th election. Smith, who finished with 5,341 votes (51 percent) to 5,212 (49 percent) for Nonna, accomplished this stunning upset against a two-term incumbent who was endorsed by Governor Andrew Cuomo, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, several newspapers and most Westchester labor unions.
Smith stated: “I wish to express my sincere appreciation to the voters of District 3 who have placed their trust in me. I see my election as the next development step in the voter’s call for fiscal responsibility as evidenced by their mandate in the election of Rob Astorino two years ago. While I disagree with County Legislator Nonna’s votes on many issues of importance to the taxpayers of District 3, I thank him and appreciate his tireless service over the past four years.
“It was a vigorous campaign with a focus on some important issues. Now the campaign rhetoric is over and the serious business of making Westchester livable for everyone kicks into its next gear. It is with great pride that our campaign has broken the Democrat’s supermajority. I fully expect come January 1 that a new collaborative approach to solving the challenges facing Westchester County will begin anew. It is a time to work together and push the partisanship to the background.
“I will work tirelessly to respect the taxpayers of this district by the appropriate use of their hard-earned tax dollars and I will vote to ensure their property rights are protected. This district deserves to be represented by someone who represents their values and who has the district’s best interest at heart and I cannot wait to begin serving my constituents with a new vision and a new passion.”

Updated Nov. 10, 2011 Early results showed an upset. Congratulations
to Howard Arden who has won as Supervisor. The numbers are not yet
official, but 100% of North Castle's 11 precincts have reported. Arden
received 1,759 votes to incumbent Bill Weaver's 1,333, a margin of 57%
to 43%.
Councilman Michael Schilro has been reelected with 1,600
votes with 28% of the votes in a field of four candidates. Steve
D'Angelo won with 1,553 votes at 27%, followed by Matt Rice's 24%
with 1,409 votes. Christopher Carthy has received 21% with 1,209 votes.
Anne Curran won unopposed as Town Clerk with 2,439 votes.
Town Justice Elyse Lazansky won with 2,401 votes at 84% to Doug Martino's 470 votes at 15%.
The residents of North Castle have elected Howard Arden and if he holds true to his campaign promises, he is ready to roll up his sleeves and get to work.
The campaigns were not pleasant; a lot of mud was slung. Residents are relieved that the election is over. Arden's victory in the Republican Primary and the imminent loss of the A&P sealed Weaver's defeat.
Arden will be sworn in as Supervisor of North Castle at the beginning of January 2012. As the new administration prepares to lead the town, perhaps there can be an end to the constant bickering of the past three years.
The Westchester County Board seat of Legislative District #3 has incumbent Democratic Legislator John Nonna behind by only 123 votes over Republican Michael Smith. The results of this race will determine the majority party of the County Board. It could be several weeks before the absentee ballots are counted.
