Byram Hills School Budget
By Amanda Kleinberg

May 15, 2012
On May 15, 2012, the day of the Byram Hills budget vote, Proposition #1 asks if “the Board of Education of Byram Hills Central School District should be authorized to expend for budgetary purposes in the school year 2012-2013 the sum of $80,423,562 and levy the necessary tax therefore upon the taxable property of the School District?” There is also a vote for two members of the Board of Education: Ann Tedesco and Leslie Blum (Cziner).

Gregory Carlson, the Assistant Superintendent for Business and Management Services, sat down and answered a few questions.

Q: What does it mean when the community passes a school budget vote?

It shows support of the community of the school and also provides a legal right to spend a certain amount of money, which is part of the budget vote so we can run our programs as we present it to the public.

Q: Why is it important for the community to vote?

It is a civic responsibility for democratic society and it permits the board to function according to its strategic plans.

The Byram Hills Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation, founded in 1994, that provides financial support to teachers and school administrators for creative programs and equipment, not normally included in the school's annual operating budget. This funding has encouraged teachers to reach beyond the confines of the school budget to provide enriching, curriculum-based learning programs to our children.

The mission of the Byram Hills Education Foundation is to enhance the educational experience of all children within the Byram Hills Central School District by generating community support to fund innovative grants that encourage learning and personal development.

The BHEF enables our schools to provide Byram Hills students with exceptional programs, projects and equipment that are not covered by the Byram Hills School District Operating Budget.
