CASTELLI PRESERVES REGION’S HISTORY BY ADDING WITTHOEFFT RESIDENCE TO REGISTRY OF HISTORICAL PLACES
Assemblyman Robert J. Castelli is pleased to announce that the Witthoefft Residence in Armonk is to be added to the State Register of Historic Places, and will soon be sent to the National Park Service for listing on the National Register. Castelli lent a letter of support to the Witthoefft Residence’s application, which was approved earlier this month.
“This house serves as a rare example of modern architecture in the suburbs north of New York City and goes above and beyond the National Register criteria as one of the great remaining residential buildings which exhibits international style,” Assemblyman Castelli said.
The State and National Registers official listings of buildings, structures, districts, landscapes, objects, and sites hold significance in history, architecture, archeology, and culture. Being part of the State and National Register list can assist property owners in the upkeep of their structures, making them eligible for varied public preservation programs and services.
Completed in 1957, the Witthoefft Residence, designed with an articulated steel structure, a functional floor plan, minimal embellishments, and the use of industrial materials, is a prime example of the transition to the Modern Movement in the home. The Modern Movement combined a distinct architectural style and stands for progression from commercial to residential design.
In 1932, the American public was first introduced to the International style, which consisted of many forms of European architecture and became the category of Modernism.
Although the International style never became as popular and eventually transitioned into American architecture, there are still many examples of this design spread throughout New York State, which included some very important commissions.
“It is imperative that we preserve our region’s rich cultural and architectural history,” Castelli said. “The survival of this home is crucial in protecting the diversity of New York, as well as bringing well-deserved recognition to the house to ensure its long-term preservation.”
The Witthoefft Residence, which home received the American Institute of Architects First Honor Award in 1962, is located on Tallwoods Road in the hamlet of Armonk. It was the only property in Westchester County recommended by the New York State Board for Historic Preservation to be approved by the State Historic Preservation Officer this year.

Summertime Turquoise, the color of summer, and also the 2010 "Color of the Year". Turquoise brings about thoughts of tranquility and relaxation, like a lazy summer day spent on the beach. Now that summer is here, it's a great time to bring that relaxing feeling into your house. Turquoise can be the main player in a color scheme - daring but beautiful - or simply used as an accent - pillows, vases or a beautiful frame - will add life to any room.
If turquoise is not your thing, how about a beautiful coral color bowl or sunny yellow throw to add some summer fun. Once your inside has set you in the summer mood, don't forget about the outside. With all of the time we spend outside during the summer, your deck, patio or porch should be just as beautiful as your living room. Add new cushions to older outdoor furniture to give it new life. An outdoor rug on can cover up a tired old deck or enhance a brand new patio. Whatever your summer holds in store, a few small changes in your decor can really set summer into swing.
