Souperman Lands in Mazzarulli’s Opus Group by Nomi Schwartz
Dec. 21, 2011 As a wise man once advised a young superhero, “With great power comes great responsibility.” For the past 14 years, Marc Mazzarulli, Byram Hills’ alum and CIA - trained restaurateur (that’s the Culinary Institute),
has balanced the power of running some of Armonk’s most popular dining venues and catering services with the responsibility of remaining current and adapting to changes in tastes and the economic environment. Souperman (soupermanarmonk.com) is the latest of his ventures, offering 15 to 29 freshly made soups, plus sandwiches and salads, throughout the day, for pick up or delivery.
OPUS 456, his flagship restaurant, remains a downtown staple. It is described by diners as unpretentious, yet sophisticated, and it features live music, an elegant bar, and a tented outdoor patio in the warm weather. Mazzarulli recalls the years when the restaurant was filled almost every night with many patrons blissfully oblivious to prices. “Times have changed,” Mazzarulli said, “and the restaurant reflects a more value-conscious sensibility. People may not eat out three and four nights a week anymore, but they still want to enjoy themselves.”
Mazzarulli has successfully explored several avenues to provide residents, area employees, and visiting diners with extensive new options. Quality take-out food has made it possible for families to enjoy more gourmet, stress-free meals at home. Low-cost lunches, with online ordering, are provided by Opus Group’s LUNCH MD, Three Little Pigs BBQ, and now, Souperman.
Soups have always been a speciality of Mazzarulli and now they are the stars of Souperman Standouts include lobster corn chowder, stracciatella, and chicken noodle. Also popular are comfort foods such as mac and cheese, chicken pot pie, and lava cake.
Mazzarulli’s intuition about dining trends has guided him to include many menu items that are gluten-free and vegan. To provide diners at OPUS 465 with lower cost and more casual alternatives to the standard dishes, items from the Three Little Pigs’ and Souperman menus can now be ordered in the restaurant.
“It’s an honor to be a local staple,” Mazzarulli said. “We really appreciate the support. We are receptive to the needs of our customers and are always evolving and trying new things.”
