Food Bank for Westchester to Benefit From Annual Stop & Shop Drive Stop & Shop customers help raise more than $2 million to fight hunger

The Food Bank for Westchester, which has been fighting hunger for more than 20 years, is one of four food banks in New York State and one of 14 in the Northeast to benefit from Stop & Shop’s 21st annual Food for Friends program this year. Stop & Shop set a new record, raising over $2 million – a 40% increase from 2009 – that will be donated to more than 300 local food pantries and regional food banks throughout Stop & Shop’s operating areas. Food Bank for Westchester will receive $22,356.
The Food for Friends program ran in all 398 Stop & Shop stores from October 29through December 10, 2010. Customers donated $1, $3, or $5 worth of “paper turkeys” at a Stop & Shop store. These donations accounted for 90% of the $2 million collected; Stop & Shop contributed an additional $500 per store.
“We are grateful to Stop & Shop customers who so generously contributed to the Food for Friends campaign this year. The donation will be put to work immediately, helping us provide food to the growing number of families needing assistance,” said Food Bank for Westchester Executive Director Christina Rohatynskyj.
